Nottingham Boy's Basketball Program Philosophy

The Nottingham Boy's Basketball coaching staff aims to develop fundamentals, mental and physical toughness, and to promote positive character traits and high academic standards through the sport of basketball. "There is more to life than basketball; but, there is more to basketball than basketball." Focus is on these areas because we want our graduating seniors to leave us with the skills and outlook necessary to lead productive lives, and hopefully win some games along the way.

The Nottingham Boy's Basketball coaching staff bases its teaching style on the theory made famous by former UCLA coach John Wooden: "Don't tell your team/player what to do, show them how to do it." Therefore, we utilize Coach Wooden's teaching formula: 1) Explain (coaching action); 2) Demonstrate (coaching action); 3) Imitate (player action); 4) Correct (coaching action); 5) Repeat (player action). We want to make sure the players know they are going to win; but, we also want to make sure they know how they are going to win.

They are going to win by being fundamentally, mentally, and physically tougher than their opponent. They are going to win by moving in unison as a group both on offense and defense and being acutely aware of what's happening on the floor.
